Siegbahn was born in Lund, Sweden, son of Manne Siegbahn the 1924 physics Nobel Prize winner. Siegbahn earned his doctorate at the University of Stockholm in 1944.

The lecture series was instituted in 1993 to the memory of Manne Siegbahn, and it is supported by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences through its Nobel Institute for Physics. The selection of speakers for the Manne Siegbahn Memorial Lecture is handled by a committee consisting of Mats Larsson, chair, AlbaNova, Sara Strandberg, Fysikum SU, Mark Pearce, Fysik KTH, Göran Östlin, Astronomi SU and David Haviland, Tillämpad fysik KTH.
