2015-10-14 · The Extract Solids from Surface command is built-in to Civil 3D 2016, and you can find out more about the command in Gaurav’s post, Four Hidden Surface Commands in Civil 3D 2016. The release of Civil 3D 2016 Productivity Pack 1 in August (you can download and install it using the Application Manager) adds a new tool called Create 3D Solids from Pipe Networks. It is crucial to understand that while Revit can link and import DWG files into the project environment, and can extrapolate topography based on connecting a series of points derived from a CAD file, Revit is not able to incorporate certain types of data that Civil 3D takes for granted. However, Revit cannot import Plant 3D models using the import from CAD tool, the Plant 3D objects show as lines, or wireframes. The work around for this is to use the BATCHEXPORTTOAUTOCAD tool to create a model which contains solid AutoCAD geometry rather than Plant 3D objects.
As most know, Revit can import "plain" AutoCAD DWG data (well, more on that in a minute) but it does not do as good a job with the "smart" elements from the AutoCAD verticals (Architecture, MEP and Civil 3D).

Create PTS file with laser scanning software or ReCap, run PTSIMPORT in AutoCAD. The resulting DWG may be imported into Revit's Family editor. (Revit's Family editor does not allow linking of point clouds but does allow importing of DWGs, hence this app is an effective workaround for seeing scans in the context of Revit Families.)
